The University of Miami School of Law has been honored this week with the naming of eleven alumni, faculty, and administrators to two prestigious local awards.
Assistant Dean of Career Development Marcy Cox was named as one of Legacy Miami’s 25 Most Influential and Prominent Black Women in Business and Leadership for 2014. Another awardee was Vernita Williams, Esq., J.D. ’89 Senior Partner, Office of Vernita C. Williams, Esq., P.A, and Associate Pastor of Stewardship, New Birth Baptist Church in Miami.
In an interview about the award, Cox credited her parents for her success. “They were great role models. They were incredibly forward thinking and helped me to understand people, the human condition, and the importance of paying it forward,” she said. “They emphasized the importance of education and the need to do well, but more importantly, the need to do good.”
The Daily Business Review(DBR) recently acknowledged the “Top 20 Women in Law: DBR Recognizes South Florida Achievers.” This inaugural recognition program singles out women in law firms, courts, other public agencies, public interest law, and education.
Among the Miami Law honorees were Patricia D. White, Dean of University of Miami School of Law, as well as eight alumnae: Hilarie Bass, J.D.’81, Greenberg Traurig; Corali Lopez-Castro, J.D.’90, Kozyak Tropin & Throckmorton; Susan N. Eisenberg, J.D.’86, Akerman; Anne Marie Estevez, J.D.’93, Morgan, Lewis & Bockius; Cheryl Little, J.D.’85, Americans for Immigrant Justice; Carol Licko, J.D.’84, Hogan Lovells; Victoria Mendez, J.D.’99, Miami City Attorney ; and Bertila Soto, J.D.’89, Miami-Dade chief circuit judge.
According to the DBR, the honorees will be feted at a luncheon on October 15.
The Legacy Miami recipients will be recognized at a luncheon on September 19.Legacy Magazine was established in 2004, and is distributed through The Miami Herald, Sun-Sentinel, the Palm Beach Post, and the Orlando Sentinel, serving South Florida’s black professional community with news and information on business, careers, politics, lifestyle, culture, and social commentary.
