Nicole Halmoukos is a busy 3L and a double ‘Cane. She is currently the Managing Editor of the University of Miami Law Review, a research assistant to Professor JoNel Newman, and the Supervising Dean’s Fellow of the Academic Achievement Program. She is also externing with the Honorable Lisa Walsh (President-Elect of the National Association of Women Judges).
Before law school Halmoukos worked as a paramedic in underserved areas in both Atlanta and Miami. Through her work as a paramedic she began to develop her interest in law after seeing that some of the patients she treated needed more help through legal representation.
Halmoukos continued to dedicate her time to serving underprivileged communities by volunteering with Empowered Youth Tutoring, a program dedicated to pairing young men from areas like Overtown and Liberty City with mentors.
“Volunteering with Empowered Youth Tutoring was just as influential on me as I hope it was for the young men in the program. Because even though we have such diverse backgrounds we found common ground to connect on,” Halmoukos said.
This past summer Halmoukos interned with the Harvard Legal Aid Bureau, a program that provides free civil legal services to low-income individuals, as part of her HOPE Fellowship. There Halmoukos represented a client throughout a trial under the supervision of an attorney.
Halmoukos has been thankful for the support she has received from the University of Miami, specifically Professor Lili Levi. “I am fortunate to have had Professor Lili Levi’s mentorship throughout my education in Miami. Her generous support for many years encouraged me to envision the type of student I wanted to be at Miami Law, and her practical encouragement has been invaluable as I’ve sought to fulfill that role.”
Halmoukos is also a member of the Bar and Gavel Honor Society, a HOPE Public Interest Fellow, a Litigation Skills Fellow, and a recipient of the Soia Mentschikoff Full Tuition Merit Scholarship.
As she looks forward to graduation in May, her goal is to “work as a civil trial attorney and to continue to be involved in community pro bono efforts.”
