Professor Bernard Oxman attended the week-long biannual meeting of the Institute of International Law, commonly known by its French name, the Institut de Droit International, in Tallinn, Estonia. Professor Oxman is one of six Americans honored by election to the Institute, whose membership is limited to a specified number of leading experts in international law from around the world. The Institute was founded in 1873, and won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1904. Its studies and resolutions have had a significant impact on the development of both public and private international law and institutions. Professor Oxman regularly teaches conflict of laws, international law, law of the sea, and torts and currently is the Faculty Chair of the Law School's Master of Laws Program in Ocean and Coastal Law. He is the immediate past co-editor in chief of the of the American Journal of International Law published by the American Society of International Law, and a member of the American Law Institute and the Council on Foreign Relations. He is the only American lawyer ever appointed to serve as judge ad hoc before the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea and the International Court of Justice.
