The National Jurist has ranked Miami Law #4 in the country and #1 in Florida in sending graduates to small law firms (firms with 2-100 attorneys).
Additionally, The National Law Journal recently released its “Go-To Schools” rankings, and Miami Law came in 15th (and 1st in Florida) for most associate-to-partner promotions among all law schools in the publication’s listing of schools with alumni promoted to partner. In this category, Miami Law placed ahead of Duke (16), University of Florida (23), Stanford (30), and Tulane (23). This moves Miami Law up seventeen slots in the publication’s rankings of associate promotion to partner in 2013.
According to Miami Law’s Assistant Dean for Career Development Marcy Cox, Miami Law has always had a large percentage of its graduates accept jobs in smaller firms. When the market softened and larger firms slashed hiring dramatically, smaller firms continued to hire our graduates at a good rate. Small firms still dominate the South Florida job market. In 2014, Miami Law saw 43 percent of its graduates at firms with less than 50 attorneys.
In addition to the benefit of having an incredibly robust small firm market, we also have a good number of our grads join large law firms. Though most large firms are headquartered in NY, DC, Chicago and LA, those firms have offices in Miami and recruit heavily at Miami Law. Consequently, our graduates have an opportunity to work in large firms as well as small law firms.”
Miami Law hosts Fall and Spring Recruiting Programs where over 150 employers – large and small firms, government agencies, corporations, and public interest employers – meet and interview students. The Career Development Office also manages an online searchable database of current legal employment opportunities.
“Our employment numbers continue to strengthen,” Cox said, “And Miami Law continues to attract strong candidates that, in turn, are attractive to legal employers of all types.”
