Second year law students Deanna Kalil and Dahlene Miller also represented Miami Law at the interscholastic appellate advocacy competition that is held under the direction of the University of Texas School of Law. The Honorable John R. Brown served on the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit as one of the nation’s most prominent admiralty judges from 1955 until his death in 1993.
This year the competition was co-sponsored by the University of San Francisco School of Law, with major funding provided by the Houston law firm of Royston, Rayzor, Vickery & Williams L.L.P. (where Judge Brown practiced for over twenty years) and the Maritime Law Association of the United States. The competition was held at the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and consisted of a written brief and oral arguments on two issues, the availability of punitive damages in actions under the Jones Act, and the availability of punitive damages in general maritime law actions for unseaworthiness.
