“I believe the competition was a once and a lifetime experience and I am beyond proud that I was able to successfully represent our great law school,” said Richter. “The contest was thrilling, and being able to personally grow while simultaneously watching Suzanne transform into one of the best oralists I've seen is something I cannot sufficiently describe."
Named after the drafter of the Model Penal Code, the annual Mechsler Competition is the only national moot court competition in the United States to focus on topics in substantive criminal law. Problems address the constitutionality and interpretation of federal and state criminal statues as well as general issues in the doctrine of federal and state criminal law. Twenty three teams from around the country competed this year.
“In regards to the brief award, Suzanne deserves all the credit- while we wrote on two separate issues, my partner's perseverance and dedication to making it the best brief possible is what won this award,” said Richter. “I couldn't have scripted a better way to finish my law school career.”
The team was coached by attorney Michael T. Davis of the Law Offices of Benedict P. Kuehne, P.A. and 2013 Miami Law graduate Andrew Beaulieu. Miami Law won the competition in 2015.
