Caroline Klamas - Brazil
As a recipient of Miami Law's Brazilian Attorney Scholarship which helped fund her International Arbitration degree, Klamas, LL.M. ’14, passed the New York Bar after graduation and returned to her home country Brazil. Since December 2014, Klamas has been working as an associate attorney at Carvalho, Machado e Timm Advogados, one of the leading law firms in Brazil. She works in the field of dispute resolution, particularly civil litigation and arbitration, and also advises clients on matters related to commercial contracts, administrative law, corporate law, and agribusiness. "During my LL.M. at UM, I was able to spend time with wonderful, and very bright people who shared with me their life experiences, and who made me reflect about my own career. I received valuable mentoring from some of my classmates, UM´s staff and Professors. After my LL.M., I took the New York Bar, and returned to my home country, Brazil. Here, I had the chance to choose from a selection of great law firms, and the conversations I had at UM were decisive in determining the next step in my career."
Eric van Eyken - Canada
Following his graduation from Miami Law with an LL.M. in 2014, Eyken, a Young ICCA Scholarship recipient passed the New York Bar and then accepted an associate position with Hanotiau & van den Berg in Brussels, Belgium. At this premier international arbitration boutique firm he practices exclusively in international arbitration, acting as tribunal secretary in disputes involving commercial and public international law. Says Eyken, “Miami’s International Arbitration LL.M. program gave me both the required insights into the practice of arbitration and access to a faculty and student network I needed to jumpstart a career focused on international disputes. Without that base, I would not be where I am today.”
Daniel Sykor - Switzerland
Sykora graduated with his LL.M. in 2014 and has been working in Zurich as an associate in the litigation and arbitration team of LALIVE, a renowned international law firm ranked by Global Arbitration Review (GAR) in the Top 10 international arbitration practices globally. At LALIVE Sykora handles mostly international cases, and he also teaches civil procedure at the University of Zurich as an adjunct professor.
Aidar Oruzbaev - Kyrgyzstan
Kyrgyz Fulbright Scholar Oruzbaev won the prestigious Edmund S. Muskie Scholarship, allowing him to pursue a summer internship opportunity in the U.S. after graduation in 2015. He then joined as an intern attorney the Houston, Texas headquarters of international arbitration practice group of Norton Rose Fulbright, an international law firm ranked by Global Arbitration Review (GAR) in the Top 30. After successfully completing the internship at Norton Rose Fulbright, he returned to Kyrgyzstan where he was offered a job as an associate at Grata Law Firm, which has a strong presence in the entire Central Asian region. Now, working in the Bishkek office, he leads the arbitration practice department and works as a counsel on business law matters. When asked about his studies at Miami Law Oruzbaev comments, “Miami Law has provided me with an opportunity to get introduced to the world of international arbitration. It is a great platform to build new connections, gain knowledge, expand network, and its best part is meeting new people and making friends with someone who happens to have the same job and do the same things but in different countries all around the globe.”
Onur Saka - Turkey
As a 2013 LL.M. graduate originally from Turkey, Saka now works as international lawyer at White & Case, Washington, D.C., representing a diverse group of multinationals and sovereigns on a variety of complex legal issues involving structuring foreign investments, cross-border negotiations, and high-stakes disputes. Regarding his LL.M. he says the “program at the University of Miami truly has met all of my expectations; the program offers an exceptional academic training with guidance from many prominent scholars and practitioners in the field of international law and arbitration. I am very grateful to the Miami Law family, particularly for providing me with the invaluable mentorship of Carolyn Lamm, whose expertise, insight, and leadership have been fundamental to my legal career.
Azusa Saito - Japan
After graduating with her LL.M. in 2013, Saito passed the New York Bar and returned to the Japanese law firm Nishimura & Asahi, one of the best law firms in Japan. There, she specializes in international arbitration and litigation. Thinking back on her LLM, Saito says, “During the LL.M. program, I learned the basic and fundamental concepts of arbitration, which was extremely helpful for my practice.”
Lilia Iemchenko - Ukraine
As a Miami Law Young ICCA Scholar, Ukrainian Iemchenko started working as a Legal Intern with the International Arbitration Practice Group of White & Case, Washington, D.C. immediately after graduating from the LL.M. program in 2015. “White & Case is No. 1 in International Arbitration, and it is a great start in this field. I am very happy to have an opportunity to be a member of this wonderful team of real professionals. I have learned a lot from the attorneys,” said Iemchenko. At White & Case, she is working under the supervision of one of the five most influential female arbitrators, White & Case partner and Miami Law visiting professor and alumna Carolyn Lamm. “It is an honor for me to work under supervision of such an outstanding lawyer,” said Iemchenko. She also noted that the LL.M. in International Arbitration at Miami Law is “one of the best programs focused in international arbitration.”
