Charles C. Papy Jr. Moot Court Board
Members of the law school’s Charles C. Papy Jr. Moot Court Board have consistently won or placed high in competitions across the U.S. for years, and many members say moot competitions are highlights of their law school career.
How has Miami Law maintained its steady wins over so many years? Current President of the Papy Board Matt Keilson attributes the legacy of wins to the symbiotic support and dedication of both students and alumni. “Our success stems from the dedication of our members and alumni. The competitors work very hard, and our alumni are eager to coach, judge, and assist.”
Miami Law Alumni Support
Miami Law alumnus and team coach Harvey Sepler agrees it is a mix of hard work on the part of the students coupled with strong support from the school and its alumni.
“Moot Court is a very demanding activity and our students have shown the level of dedication necessary to bring home international, national and state championships,” says Sepler. “Thanks to the school, our alumni, the many coaches over the years, and the involvement of our legal community, we've enjoyed a great deal of success and I am privileged to be part of that effort.”
Having law school alumni support and coach teams is not standard at all law schools. Miami Law’s alumni network plays a significant role in the Moot Court success. “That relationship is unique to the University of Miami School of Law. It is a cornerstone of the moot court program,” echoes Keilson.
The Strength of the Students
Of course, the wins ultimately boil down to the students and their talent as oral and written advocates. “As a longtime Moot Court coach, I can tell you that the students who comprise the Moot Court Board and who participate in competitions are extremely hard-working and serious,” affirms Sepler. “Their writing and oral advocacy skills have been honed to the highest levels and we're very proud of our competitors.”
