In 2016-17, students in our LL.M. Programs expanded their experiences with more hands-on learning, more practical instruction, and more on-the-job training. There were many LL.M. news stories, below are some of the highlights from 2016-17:

ALL LL.M. PROGRAMS
In LLM Orientation Panel of Graduates Echoes Value of LL.M. in Boosting Careers and Professional Networks

Six LL.M. alumni from programs in Real Estate Development, Estate Planning, International Law, Tax, International Arbitration and Entertainment, Arts and Sports Law spoke to the incoming 2015-16 classes of Miami Law's LL.M. programs, and each carried a message of opportunity.


REAL ESTATE/ PROPERTY DEVELOPMENT LAW
Unparalleled Real Estate Expertise – Alumna Betsy McCoy of The Related Group

“I cut my teeth as a lawyer by representing lenders through a prior real estate market downturn, and I wanted to position myself to be of value to lenders or developers when the inevitable happened….Those changes in the lending practices were the catalyst for my election to pursue the LL.M."


ARTS LAW
Spotlight on Art Law: Course on Artists’ Role in the Market and Philanthropic Arena

Miami Law Professor Stephen Urice and Christine Vincent, Project Director for The Aspen Institute's Artist-Endowed Foundations Initiative, introduced students to legal and policy issues of charitable, tax-exempt entities (“501(c)(3)’s”) through the lens of artist-endowed foundations. 


ENTERTAINMENT LAW
Student Steps Towards Dream with Practicum at NBC Universal Telemundo

“The program has helped me get there by not only placing me into the real practice but by granting me the privilege to work with and learn from these role models I look up to professionally. I’m drafting and negotiating agreements for the first time while being challenged to develop the skills that are in demand when becoming an effective lawyer in the entertainment industries,” says Maria Jose Rivera.


ESTATE PLANNING LAW
Camaraderie + Network Lead to Job for Estate Planning LL.M. Alum

“I always had it in the back of my mind that I wanted to go to law school,” Brackin says. “When I got out of the M.B.A. program, the economy had tanked, and there were not as many options. With an accounting background and a law degree, all the doors were open. I started researching the programs, and one thing that really drew me [to the Heckerling LL.M. in Estate Planning] was that it is taught by actual practitioners in the field,” he says.


MARITIME LAW
Professor Bernard Oxman Lectures on the South China Sea Arbitration

Professor Oxman, world expert on the law of the sea and is Chair of the Maritime Law LL.M. Program, was one of five legal counsels to the Philippines in the South China Sea case before the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague.


INTERNATIONAL ARBITRATION
Graduates Practice International Arbitration in Firms Worldwide 

Graduates of Miami Law’s White & Case International Arbitration LL.M. Program practice in the international dispute resolution field with law firms, multinational corporations and arbitral institutions in the United States and abroad.


INTENSIVE LEGAL ENGLISH + LLM
Program Provides Bridge to LL.M. for International Students

Galicia, Spain native Lorena Senra, one of eight students in the Intensive English Program's inaugural class, is pursuing her  LL.M. degree in Entertainment, Arts and Sports Law, thanks to the new LL.M. with Intensive Legal English Program at Miami Law.


INTERNATIONAL LAW
Mentorship in International Moot Program Expands International Law Knowledge

Nicolle Lafosse, already a lawyer in her native Honduras graduated from UNITEC, the Central American Technical University. She said, in Honduras there are only two branches of law that you can choose from when pursuing a law masters. "And I didn't want to do either…Coming to Miami Law, I could have a higher degree, and I want to contribute intellectually to my parents’ firm." She decided to pursue a Master’s Degree with an international component.


SPORTS LAW
Sports Law Agent that Inspired “Jerry Maguire” Shows Miami Law Students “The Money”

On November 4, Leigh Steinberg spoke with Miami Law students in a “Sports Law” class sharing, “If you can put yourself into the head and the heart of another person, and see the world the way they see it, you can craft win-win scenarios and navigate your way gracefully through life.” This is the “mission statement” of character Jerry Maguire’s real life inspiration, Leigh Steinberg, one of the most successful agents in professional sports.
