WHAT: The University of Miami School of Law is hosting a two-day symposium, “Crises of Liberal Democracy: Political Economy, Social Integration, Law, and Identity,” in honor of the work and career of Professor David Abraham.
WHO: Abraham will be joined by more than a dozen distinguished scholars from across the country and Europe including Claus Offe, Emeritus-Professor of Political Sociology, and Ulrich K. Preuß, Emeritus Professor of Law and Politics, from the Hertie School of Governance in Berlin; Geoff Eley, Professor of Contemporary History at the University of Michigan; Anson Rabinbach, Professor of History, and Kim Lane Scheppele, Professor of Sociology and International Affairs, from Princeton University; and Nancy Green, Directrice d'études (EHESS, Paris).
Abraham teaches Property, Immigration & Citizenship Law, Citizenship and Identity, Law and the Transition to Capitalism, and Law and Social Theory. He has been widely published in each of those areas as well as serving as a frequent media commentator for American, German, and Israeli newspapers and television.
Abraham has been a visiting professor at Tübingen University in Germany, Deakin University in Australia, the École des Hautes Études in Paris, and the Transitional Justice Institute in Belfast. In the spring 2010 semester, Abraham was UM's first Fellow at the American Academy in Berlin. He is a Distinguished DAAD and Humbolt Fellow and has published on the welfare state, the collapse of the Weimar Republic, problems of multicultural societies and the transformation of citizenship in an era of neo-liberal globalization.
