CORAL GABLES, Florida (April 21, 2017) – A big legal innovation/tech conference is coming up April 22 & 23 at the alumni center at the University of Miami. It’s called LawWithoutWalls, or LWOW and it is pretty unique.
LWOW is attended by 100 students from law and business schools all over the world — including University College London, Peking University, Vilnius University in Lithuania. They meet at the beginning of the semester someplace — this year was at Harvard — and spend a couple of days getting to know one another and a group of mentors, thought leaders, and such. At the end of the meeting, the students team up with a mentor and decide what legal issue they are going to suss out over the course of the semester.
Everyone meets for “class” once a week online in a suite — chat boxes, power points, live video, etc. — with various speakers, presenters, entrepreneurs, and law firm representatives. At the end, they all come to Miami to present their projects.
Several past projects are in various stages of development, including Judgment Pay, an online site that uses social media in the collection of legal judgments. Some heavy hitters — Microsoft, Lockheed Martin, Legal Zoom — sponsor some of the projects.
