They waited hours in the heat to get food stamps. They’ll have to wait even more. I Miami Herald
The University of Miami Law Clinic, which last week sued the state agency contending that DCF had not adequately provided for disabled people as required by federal law, also wasn’t happy to learn the agency shuttered the Hard Rock site.
“We are deeply troubled by the reports that DCF shut down the Hard Rock site today … and by the numerous medical emergencies in Miami-Dade and Broward caused by long lines, no water or other human comforts, and heat stroke. Individuals are having to make the impossible choice between sacrificing their health and well-being and, for some, aggravating their disabilities, in order to secure food they desperately need,” JoNel Newman, director of the law clinic, wrote in an email Wednesday to DCF and the USDA.
Need To Register For Disaster Food Stamps? Prepare To Wait In Line (And In Court) I WLRN
The long waiting times resulted in a lawsuit filed by the Miami Workers Center and the Health Rights Clinic at the University of Miami asking the federal government to provide some way for people who can’t physically go and stand in line to still have the opportunity to sign up for D-SNAP. While the program is administered by the Florida Department of Children and Families, the program is ultimately controlled by the U.S. Department of Agriculture
Reddit Bans ‘Incel’ Group for Inciting Violence Against Women The New York Times
Mary Anne Franks, a professor of law at the University of Miami, who has studied online abuse and harassment, said that when she read Mr. Rodger’s manifesto she was reminded of George Sodini, a Pennsylvania man who shot dead three women in Pennsylvania in 2009, leaving behind an online diary that detailed his loneliness and lack of success with women.
“These men got angry at the women that they see as depriving them of something they are entitled to,” Professor Franks said. “It was a trend in online forums, that they legitimately had reasons to lash out,” speaking of Mr. Rodger and Mr. Sodini.
Moral Hazard on Stilts” ‘Zeran’s’ Legacy I Law.com
By Mary Anne Franks: Less than a week after the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing that left 168 people dead, Kenneth Zeran began receiving threatening phone calls at his home. He soon discovered the reason: without Zeran’s knowledge, an anonymous hoaxer had posted a message on an America Online (AOL) bulletin board advertising t-shirts and other paraphernalia glorifying the attack, providing Zeran’s home phone number for interested buyers to call. Although AOL complied with Zeran’s request that the message be removed, new messages with similar content continued to be posted to the site. At one point, Zeran was receiving threatening calls every two minutes. After an Oklahoma City radio station read the slogans on air and urged listeners to call Zeran, the phone calls became so threatening that Zeran’s house was placed under protective surveillance.
