Miami Law's Center for Ethics and Public Service chose the Friends of the Everglades to receive the 16th annual William M. Hoeveler Award. The prestigious prize celebrates extraordinary members of the bar and bench, as well as leading nonprofit organizations, distinguished by their long-standing dedication to ethics and public service. To honor Friends of the Everglades, the law school hosted a luncheon and ceremony on April 5.
Friends of the Everglades was founded in 1969 by renowned journalist, author, and environmental activist Marjory Stoneman Douglas. The mission of Friends of the Everglades is to preserve, protect, and restore the only everglades in the world.
“I had the great good fortune to see Judge Hoeveler in action on the bench,” said Alan Farago, vice president of Conservation for FOE. “With all the issues of law and society flowing through his court, he not only spent the time to digest the facts of Everglades restoration but who had the wisdom to sift through the competing arguments often based in complex science.
“It is a very meaningful honor for Friends of the Everglades to receive that William M. Hoeveler Award; Marjory Stoneman Douglas is applauding from above,” he said.
The Hoeveler Award was created in honor of the Honorable William M. Hoeveler, senior U.S. District Court judge and the inaugural recipient, as a lifetime achievement award for a lawyer or an organization of outstanding ethics and public service.

“We need you, law students, in these great battles because nothing is settled and there is every indication that your turn at the helm of these great societal issues involving the environment,” Farago said “will require grit, determination, and inspiration. Congratulations on your work and for what you are going to do.”
