Professor John H. Rooney, Jr., who serves as an adjunct professor and is a member of the prestigious faculty in Miami Law’s J.D. and White & Case International Arbitration LL.M. Programs, recently participated as a panelist in the IV Congress of National and International Arbitration held in Cartagena and organized by the Bogota Chamber of Commerce, through its Arbitration and Conciliation Center.
The Bogota Chamber of Commerce, through its Arbitration and Conciliation Center, opened spaces for discussion and exchange of experiences on international arbitration trends at the IV Congress of National and International Arbitration that took place between March 4 and 6 at the Hotel Conrad in Cartagena. Lawyers, arbitrators, arbitration practitioners, and experts from Colombia, Latin America, and around the world met to learn about international trends in dispute resolution as well as the most common controversies.
Rooney participated in a panel discussion with Andres Jana Linetksy, president of Working Group II on Arbitration and Conciliation/Dispute Settlement of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL). During the discussion, Professor Rooney participated in discussions on recent developments in the area of expedited arbitration.
“On March 5, 2010, I participated in a panel on UNCITRAL initiatives in the area of expedited arbitration, as part of the IV Congress on National and International Arbitration in Cartagena, organized by the Conciliation and Arbitration Center of the Chamber of Commerce of Bogotá," said Rooney. "The quality of the presentations was very high, as was the level of those attending the congress. I would like to thank in this public forum the kind invitation of the Center, and in particular of Mauricio González, to attend.”
Yasmina Assis, Associate Director of Miami Law’s International Graduate Law Programs, said, “The congress on National and International Arbitration organized by the Center of Arbitration and Conciliation of the CCB is considered one of the most important academic events in Colombia and Latin America. The event had the participation of the best arbitrators and practicing lawyers from Colombia and Latin America."
Miami Law currently has an agreement of collaboration with the Center of Arbitration and Conciliation of the Bogota Chamber of Commerce under which Miami Law provides a scholarship of $15,000 USD toward the LL.M. tuition fees for up to four graduates nominated by the Center to attend one of Miami Law’s LL.M. programs.
Sandra Friedrich, Lecturer in Law and Director of Miami Law’s International Arbitration Institute and LL.M. Program, adds, “We are very proud of our academic and scholarship collaboration with the Center of Arbitration and Conciliation of the Chamber of Commerce of Bogotá, one of the principal arbitral institutions in Latin America. Professor Rooney’s participation in this prestigious arbitration event organized by the Center was one of the first collaborative projects under the new Agreements. We look forward to many more and believe our Miami Law community as well as members of the Center will greatly benefit from joint educational events and by bringing talented professionals interested in specializing in international arbitration or other areas of law to Miami Law for their graduate studies.”
