‘A’ for Tech Law
The law is increasingly tech-driven - from the way law firms do business, to the way courts operate. Miami Law prepares students for this growing landscape of technology through course offerings, engagement with entrepreneurs, and experiential opportunities regionally and elsewhere. Not surprisingly, PreLaw Magazine gave Miami Law an ‘A’ rating for technology law.
Miami Law offers a plethora of courses in the area of tech law as well as concentrations in The Business of Innovation, Law and Technology (BILT) and in Business Compliance and Sustainability. Hands-on learning is a focus of Miami Law and practicums, such as the Startup Practicum, Cyber Civil Rights Initiative and the Community Equity, Innovation, and Resource Lab, give students insight into technology law and a window into what it is like to practice in that area under the supervision of attorneys and professors.
Miami Law is also well-known for We Robot, a conference on legal and policy issues relating to robotics, as well as LawWithoutWalls program, an all-virtual experiential learning initiative that leverages intergenerational, cross-cultural, multi-disciplinary exchange to change the mindsets and behaviors of practicing and aspiring legal professionals.
‘A’ in International Law
With one of the largest number of faculty members who teach or do scholarly research in the area of international and foreign law of any American law school, the University of Miami School of Law is known for its strength in international law.
PreLaw Magazine recognized this, giving an ‘A’ rating to Miami Law for International Law. Additional strengths in international law include Miami Law’s large international, comparative and foreign law library collection, two internationally-oriented law reviews, the International Arbitration Institute, and a variety of student organizations with an international law slant.
‘A-’ for Trial Advocacy
Miami Law also earned high marks in trial advocacy as moot court, litigation skills, and mock trial are strong components of the law school program.
The acclaimed Litigation Skills Program is taught by experienced trial lawyers and judges. Students engage in rigorous, hands-on training in practical skills for competent professional legal service. Professor Tamara Lave, who served as a celebrated deputy public defender in San Diego, California, for 10 years, recently took over the reins of the Lit Skills program. Students can also concentrate their law studies with Litigation and Dispute Resolution.
Through the Charles C. Papy Moot Court Board, the Trial Team, and the International Moot Court Program, students hone advocacy skills locally, across the U.S. and all over the world.
Recent moot and trial team successes have included: first place winner of the All Star National Challenge, top five place in the 2020 FDI Moot, and semi-finalists in the 2020 Emory Civil Rights and Liberties Moot Court Competition.
Miami Law also received an A- for Public Policy Law tied to our partnership with the University of Miami Department of Political Science, College of Arts and Sciences to offer a joint J.D./M.P.A. in Law and Public Administration.
PreLaw ranked schools based on breadth of curricular offerings specifically giving weight to clinics, concentrations, centers, externships, journals, and student groups.
