The road to L.A. entertainment lawyer started at University of Georgia for Jamie Lincenberg, B.B.A. ’13. Originally from Atlanta, she decided at UGA to focus on marketing at the Terry College of Business and music business in UGA’s Music Business Certificate Program.

“As an undergrad at UGA, I joined the music business program which offered specialized courses concentrated on music/entertainment industry fundamentals and skills as well as industry internships in and outside of Athens, GA.”

Lincenberg’s extracurricular activities and internships during undergrad also fed her interest in the media industry. She interned at Creative Artists Agency in 2013, Sony Music Entertainment in 2011 and at an Atlanta recording studio, Silent Sound Studios, in 2010. She even actively played out her passion for entertainment as the coordinator of Sigma Delta Tau’s Greek Grind in Fall 2010.

Heading South for a Law School with Entertainment Expertise

Near the end of her time at UGA, it was clear to Lincenberg that law was in her future. “By the end of my four years at UGA, I had decided that I wanted to pursue a career as an entertainment lawyer and enrolled at the University of Miami School of Law for the Fall of 2013 as the practical next step to reaching that goal.”

Miami Law was a draw as it had specialized entertainment and sports law dual degrees that focused on the media industries. Lincenberg first thought she would enroll in the J.D./M.M. in Music Business offered in conjunction with the law school and UM’s Frost School of Music. However, she decided upon another joint degree to better suit her career goals.

“I transitioned to Miami Law’s J.D./LL.M. in Entertainment, Arts and Sports law program, which was being offered for the first time and was a better fit for my goals.”

How Studying Law in Miami Helped Reach Career Goals

For anyone with an interest in the entertainment areas – which now encompass sports, art, media and more – Lincenberg feels Miami cannot be beat. “The coursework, the industry connections, internship opportunities and true sense of community that the program provided to me throughout my three years of law school was, and still is, invaluable. “

The J.D./LL.M. allowed Lincenberg to take unique courses like “The Art of Negotiation”, study with amazing professors like program director, Harold Flegelman, and spend a semester externing with Cannonball Miami - a legal aid program serving artists and arts organizations throughout Florida. She even worked in her hometown of Atlanta one summer for a firm with expertise in the entertainment law area, further adding to her impressive resume.

Advice for UGA Undergrads Who See Law in Their Future

Lincenberg cannot say enough about the importance of networking, “taking advantage of local networking opportunities during law school was key to building the strong foundation that I needed when entering the job market after graduating law school.”

Now as a lawyer in the entertainment group of the firm Weintraub Tobin Chediak Grodin Coleman in L.A., she also passes on advice she was given that has had a big impact on her career – “you will get out of law school what you choose to put into it, it can be an incredible stepping stone to reach your career goals if you take advantage of what is offered.”

What if unlike Lincenberg, whose personal interests were always entertainment-focused, a future lawyer is unsure of what area of law to study?

She says just “focus on the coursework that speaks to you, go to any and all networking events that pique your interest and seek out those experiences that will lead you down your own personal career path.”

And, as a die-hard Dawgs fan, Lincenberg further advises you can still head to Miami which is in the ACC, since it allowed her to stay loyal to her beloved SEC East team!
