CORAL GABLES, Fla. (April 6, 2021) – The legal industry is waiting with anticipation to get a better understanding of which industries will be ripe for new class action matters over the coming year or two as during the pandemic there has been a significant drop in the number of class action filings – when the economy stops or slows, legal action tends to follow suit. In light of those developments, likely sectors to see new filings as the economy revs up are travel, consumer retail, automotive, banking/finance, and healthcare and form the subtext for this year's annual Miami Law Class Action & Complex Litigation Forum at the University of Miami School of Law on April 23, 2021.
The 5th annual forum offers a unique perspective for attorneys looking to understand the latest issues and topics associated with multi-district class actions and complex litigation. Originally the brainchild of three leading Miami firms in trial, appellate, and class action law, Kozyak Tropin & Throckmorton; Podhurst Orseck; and Harke Law LLP, this year's virtual conference brings together leaders in the legal, political, and academic spheres to educate those with interesting the field on how to utilize and understand class actions.
"As we gradually return to normal and our economy stabilizes coming out of the pandemic, there is reason to believe that a resurgence of economic activity will see an increase in the number of cases brought around the country – including class action filings – later this year and into 2022," said Podhurst Orseck class action practice head Peter Prieto. "While it remains to be seen which industries and what issues will be involved in those cases, the University of Miami School of Law is convening a stellar group of judges, practitioners, and academics to discuss some of the cutting-edge issues we have seen and are likely to see over the coming months."
Podhurst Orseck partner Aaron S. Podhurst will deliver opening remarks. Prominent judges, practitioners, and professors from around the United States – leaders in the field of mass torts, insurance, and consumer litigation – will sit on two panels: "Do's and Don'ts of Moving for and Defending Class Certification" and "Hot Topics in Class Actions and MDL."
Participating judges from throughout the U.S. court system include U.S. District Judge for the Northern District of Alabama David Proctor; U.S. Court of Appeals Judge for the Seventh Circuit Amy J. St. Eve; U.S. District Judge for the Northern District of Illinois Robert M. Dow; U.S. District Judges for the Southern District of Florida Roy Altman and Beth Bloom.
The Friday, April 23, 2021, event, from 1:30 p.m. EST -until 4:30 p.m. EST via Zoom, is open to the public with registration. Cost is $79 (complimentary registration for students and public interest attorneys).
