In the listing by alma mater - which determines the law schools with the greatest number of alumni included on the Super Lawyers list - Miami Law has 652 alumni selected. This puts Miami Law as the #1 school in South Florida and #2 in all of Florida.
The Super Lawyers list recognizes no more than 5 percent of attorneys in each state with this honor, and the strong number of Miami Law alumni is notable. According to Dean Anthony E. Varona, “the Super Lawyers’ ranking attests to Miami Law’s record of producing outstanding, ethical, and very highly regarded attorneys that become leaders in their respective specialties. Our professors, who teach students how to be creative problem solvers, will continue to pave the way for the success of so many of our graduates.”
The Selection Process - How Many Lawyers Make the List?
Every year, Super Lawyers magazine recognizes lawyers from more than 70 fields of law through peer nominations and independent research.
The selection process is multiphase and rigorous. According to the Super Lawyers’ website, “each candidate is evaluated on 12 indicators of peer recognition and professional achievement. Selections are made on an annual, state-by-state basis. The objective is to create a credible, comprehensive and diverse listing of outstanding attorneys that can be used as a resource for attorneys and consumers searching for legal counsel.”
The candidates who receive the highest point totals in each practice area are selected for the final list.
How is selection in Super Lawyers distinguished from other attorney rankings? Each list is created methodically and objectively by combining research with peer nomination and review and the selection process has been validated by courts and bar associations. A lawyer earns the selection annually - it is not a lifetime designation. Lastly, it is exclusive and recognizes no more than 5 percent of attorneys in each state to the list.
A Revealing Ranking In-Step with Career Accomplishment
Other law school rankings often factor in criteria such as LSAT scores, acceptance rates, student-to-faculty ratios, and library resources. The Super Lawyers’ ranking instead shows how good of a lawyer a student from a particular school will ultimately become. Nominating fellow attorneys as a super lawyer entails respect for their skill, demeanor, and integrity.
As a law school with excellent trial advocacy programs, it is not a surprise that Miami Law is in the top 15 as these programs prepare Miami Law students for practice.
When asked to reflect on the ranking, Laurie S. Silvers, B.A. ’74, J.D. ’77, Vice Chair of the University of Miami Board of Trustees and Chair of the Law Dean’s Advisory Council commented, "I am delighted that our law alumni have been ranked highly by Super Lawyers based on peer nominations and evaluations combined with independent research. It provides validation to something that I already knew- our school has always produced outstanding lawyers who continue to excel in their chosen practice areas. I applaud them and the faculty who taught them and guided them on their path to success.”
