Estate planning attorneys, trust officers and wealth-management professionals will gather online May 3-6, 2021 for the first virtual Heckerling Institute on Estate Planning, a division of the University of Miami School of Law, the largest such gathering of its kind in the world.
Now in its 55th year, the nation's leading conference is for estate planners, trust officers, accountants, insurance advisors and wealth management professionals and offers a comprehensive immersion into the latest estate-planning techniques and strategies. It is organized typically as an in-person every January, and this May the stellar program will still attract 2,500+ attendees in this latest edition offered virtually to safeguard the health and well-being of its constituents.
New Proposed Tax Legislation Just one of Many Program Highlights
The May program will offer complete coverage of the recent developments from 2020 and early 2021, including the potential impact of the recent elections, and the planning implications of the recently proposed tax. It will also include:
- Practical Guidance on Today's Most Significant Tax and Non-tax Planning Issues: Included will be planning for the increasingly important interplay among wealth transfer tax, income tax, and investment planning.
- Recent Developments and Question and Answer Panel: Presented by four of the nation’s leading estate planning experts, these programs will provide practical guidance on planning effectively in today’s evolving legal and economic environment including the potential impact and planning opportunities presented by proposed or anticipated tax legislation.
- Strategic Planning for Another Year of Change: How to take advantage of the “bonus” transfer tax exemptions and overcome planning inertia, using preferred partnerships to shift growth between family members, and evaluating and fortifying existing planning structures.
- Solutions to Income Tax Pitfalls in Estate Planning: Review the income tax concepts that are fundamental to estate planning, including issues involved in modifying or terminating trusts, creating private annuities, changing trust ownership for income tax purposes, planning with charitable trusts, promissory notes, installment sales, transactions between spouses, basis shifting, and upstream planning.
- Planning for Retirement Benefits After the SECURE Act: How to plan in the post-SECURE world including trust drafting guidelines, new trust administration challenges, and the key features of fiduciary income tax that planners must understand.
- Diversity, Culture and Ethics in Estate Planning: Learn how various faiths think about estate planning and the ethical implications of considering faith, culture and diversity when working with clients.
Networking Still Strong Component of Event
Although attendees will miss seeing each other in person, this year’s event will still enable attendees to enjoy valuable networking and professional development opportunities unique to the nation's largest gathering of estate planning professionals.
This will include a fully online virtual exhibit hall dedicated entirely to the estate planning industry as well as a schedule with multiple opportunities for networking built into the four-day event.
