The Asian Pacific American Bar Association of South Florida recently selected Miami Law’s 1L student July Choi as the inaugural recipient of The Meenu Sasser Family Scholarship. Choi, who received her undergraduate degree in international relations from the Georgia Institute of Technology, is a first-generation Asian law student who began her legal studies last week.
“I was elated and extremely honored to hear that I had been chosen as the recipient of the Meenu Sasser Family Scholarship. I was humbled to learn that the leadership at APABA saw something within me to deem me worthy of being chosen,” said Choi.
The Honorable Meenu Talwar Sasser was appointed as a Palm Beach County Circuit Court Judge in 2009, becoming Palm Beach County’s first Asian American judge. The judge was a tireless advocate for the advancement of women and minorities in the law and was a mentor to many lawyers and judges.
In celebration of her life and legacy, the APABA South Florida has established The Meenu Sasser Family Scholarship, which awards one law student a $1,000 scholarship each year. Sasser had a passion for the law, the court system, and improving the lives of people in it, and this scholarship in her name will help those studying to enter the profession she loved and served.
Choi worked as a legal assistant and paralegal in Atlanta during her time as an undergraduate and is interested in pursuing international law.
“I chose to obtain my J.D. from Miami because of its great International Law program and because of the multicultural environment here,” said Choi. “Other than the typical goals of wanting to secure a great internship and getting satisfactory grades, I hope to make meaningful connections at Miami Law and be involved in student organizations such as the Asian Pacific America Law Student Association, First-Generation Law Association, and the International Arbitration Society. I also hope to be an instrumental part of winning the Dean’s Cup all three years. Go Canes!”
