The Tax Talks, hosted by the Graduate Program in Taxation, began in August and hosts speakers from accounting firms, IRS, tax attorneys, banks, and family offices. The talks are open to all UM and Miami Law students who have an interest. It is a way for students to learn about the different paths available to them in the tax arena and the work they can expect.

Tuesday, September 28, Miami Law adjunct professor James Border, J.D. ‘85, 3:30-4:45 p.m.
Border has practiced tax since 1979 with a broad-based experience in state, federal, international and foreign taxes. For over 30 years, Border has represented companies in international transportation as the chief tax officer and senior tax counsel for Carnival Corporation, and in private practice and through global trade associations.

Speakers: Jeff Hagen an associate at Harper Meyer, focuses his practice on international tax and estate planning, primarily for high-net-worth individuals, multi-jurisdictional families, entities, and trust structures.
James M. Meyer, J.D. ‘89, is a founding partner of the law firm Harper Meyer. He concentrates his practice on the representation of U.S. and Latin American-based multinational corporations, financial institutions, manufacturers, franchisors, family offices and private high net worth clients in general corporate matters, commercial transactions, cross-border leasing, financing, and sales and acquisitions of capital equipment, including aircraft and yachts.

Kellogg works with families to make informed decisions for their wealth enterprise. As partner of WE Family Offices, he works with clients to identify their unique objectives and challenges and to implement a comprehensive planning strategy in coordination with their estate and tax planning professionals.

Tuesday, October 26, Baker & McKenzie LLP, Speaker: Adjunct Professor Jeffrey Rubinger, 3:30-4:45 p.m.
Rubinger is a principal in Baker McKenzie’s Global Tax Planning Group and practice in the area of domestic and international taxation.
Past speakers include: IRS Office of Chief Counsel, Adjunct Professor Michelle Robles. Robles is an associate area counsel for the Large Business & International Division at the IRS Office of Chief Counsel in Miami, Florida. She has worked for the IRS Office of Chief Counsel for over 10 years and specializes in federal tax litigation.
Rahul Ranadive, Carlton Fields shareholder, has over 20 years of experience advising international high net worth families on global estate and trust planning, private banking, and other personal tax matters. He advises closely held family businesses on a wide range of international and domestic tax and corporate issues.
Adjunct Professor Karen Lapekas is a principal at Lapekas Law, P.A. where she focuses on tax litigation and tax controversy. She litigates matters in the U.S. Tax Court and U.S. District Court (S.D. Fla.) and represents clients in audit, collection, and compliance matters before the IRS and Florida Department of Revenue, and NY State Dept. of Taxation & Finance. Before starting Lapekas Law, she was a Senior Attorney at the IRS Office of Chief Counsel (Miami) where she represented the IRS in over 170 cases in U.S. Tax Court and served as a Special Assistant United States Attorney defending the government’s interest in Bankruptcy cases. She is admitted to practice law in Michigan, New York, and Florida, but advises and represents individuals and businesses on IRS matters worldwide.
Daniel Nir is a managing director in the Transfer Pricing practice, based in the Boston office. He leverages over 11 years of transfer pricing and international tax consulting experience.
Alex Feal is an Ernst and Young manager of International Tax and Transaction Services and received his J.D./LL.M. in Tax in 2014 and his MBA in 2013.
Scott Mitchell Klein practices domestic and cross-border tax planning and currently works as a manager with a leasing professional services company, Deloitte. In his most recent role as a senior associate with Ernst & Young, LLP, he helped manage domestic and international merger and acquisition planning as well as assisting large corporations with internal restructurings.
Eduardo Perillo is an International Tax Experienced Manager at BDO USA, LLP.
Andrew Bratslavsky received his LL.M. in Tax in 2021.
