On January 29, 2022, UM President Julio Frenk will kick off the return of the course titled “Hospitals, Health Care Services, and Access – An Interdisciplinary Inquiry.” His talk will focus on the relative performance of health systems globally during the pandemic. Miami Law’s Health Disparities Project Fredman Family Foundation Practitioner-in-Residence Dr. Timothy Loftus spearheaded the course’s return.

The course did not occur last year due to pandemic-induced challenges.

“When asked if I would be interested in bringing the course back for students, I enthusiastically jumped at the opportunity,” Loftus said. “The course brings together graduate students across all of UM’s schools. It is a unique opportunity to examine challenges with others who think differently about these issues.”

The course is a multidisciplinary effort with students and faculty from law, medicine, public health sciences, business, nursing, arts and sciences, engineering, architecture, and the School of Education and Human Development.

Students will spend six Saturdays together through April examining challenges in our health care system and exploring solutions alongside faculty leading research and interventions on these issues. Once students return to in-person class in February, the participants will also enjoy catered breakfast and lunch to allow for socializing and networking.

“The Healthcare Access course provides a unique space for students of different backgrounds to gather, discuss and engage major scholars with expertise in varying disciplines on how to tackle Healthcare big challenges. It’s a lot of fun!” said Dr. Alberto Caban-Martinez, associate vice provost for Research Integrity and deputy director of the School of Medicine’s M.D./M.P.H. program.

Loftus was supported in his efforts by Vice Provost for Research and Scholarship Erin Kobetz and Miami Law’s Vice Dean for Academic Affairs Drew Dawson.

The course began in 2011 with then President Donna Shalala kicking off the program.

The course still has openings for interested students. Contact Loftus at tloftus@law.miami.edu
