Miami's emergence as an international arbitration center is based on developing a sound and multifaceted infrastructure to support international arbitration and the existence of innate qualities that provide it a competitive advantage over other jurisdictions in the region.
The Miami International Arbitration Society, together with the University of Miami School of Law's International Arbitration Institute and International Arbitration Society will host the first annual LATAM Investor-State Arbitration Conference Sunday, October 30.
"We are very proud to be hosting the first-ever Latin American Investor-State Arbitration Conference. The speaker lineup reads like a veritable who is who of international arbitration," said Sandra Friedrich, assistant dean and director of the institute. "With several members of Miami Law’s International Arbitration faculty featured on the program, including Carolyn Lamm, J.D. ’73, partner, White & Case, and Distinguished Faculty Co-Chair of Miami Law’s International Arbitration LL.M.; Jonathan C. Hamilton, partner, White & Case, and Distinguished Faculty Chair of Miami Law’s International Arbitration Institute; Luis O’Naghten, partner, Hughes Hubbard & Reed; and David W. Rivkin, partner, Debevoise & Plimpton.
The daylong event will feature an International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes commentary, two debates, a Tylney Hall-style symposium, and a keynote address by Juan Fernandez-Armesto. Over the past 20 years, he has acted as chairperson, co-arbitrator, and sole arbitrator in more than 180 proceedings, including investment, commercial, and construction arbitrations.
The conference will fit neatly right in between the International Chamber of Commerce International Arbitration Conference, and the International Bar Association Annual Meeting in Miami, bringing thousands of international lawyers to town this fall.
The International Arbitration Institute embodies the University of Miami's long tradition of engagement with arbitration law. The institute strives to support the International Arbitration LL.M. and to enhance the depth and breadth of course offerings in international arbitration. In addition, the Institute fosters the study of international arbitration through educational lectures and trainings, scholarships, and data-gathering.
The IA Institute also develops and pursues projects that serve the larger international arbitration community, mainly focusing on the Latin American and Caribbean regions.
The event is open to the public. The cost to attend, with registration, is $275 for members, $300 for non-members, and $50 for students. The October 30, 2022, conference is from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Donna E. Shalala Student Center, 1330 Miller Dr, Miami, FL 33146.
