Albert Jan van den Berg, who has been associated with and teaching in Miami Law's White & Case International Arbitration LL.M. for a decade, has recently been named Distinguished Faculty Co-Chair of the program.
Van den Berg is a highly distinguished academic, counsel, and arbitrator in the international arbitration field and handles international arbitration proceedings relating to various sectors and industries. He is one of the foremost experts on the New York Convention, which governs the recognition and enforcement of arbitral agreements and awards in 170 countries around the globe.
"We are very excited for him to join us in this new and expanded role!" said Caroline Bradley, associate dean for International and Graduate Programs. "Our entire community will benefit from Professor van den Berg's unparalleled scholarly and practical expertise in international arbitration."
The LL.M. in International Arbitration at Miami Law provides a unique individualized educational curriculum and opportunity for a small group of top-quality students from a range of countries wishing to acquire an in-depth grounding in international arbitration as a platform for a successful career.
Van den Berg will teach two in-person classes per year – usually two required courses: Basic Concepts of International Arbitration in the fall and the New York Convention and International Arbitration in the spring. He will also participate in the law school's intellectual life and will collaborate in developing the curriculum for the International Arbitration LL.M.
Van den Berg is the honorary president of the International Council for Commercial Arbitration, serving as president from 2014 to 2016. He was also president and secretary-general of the Netherlands Arbitration Institute and vice president of the London Court of International Arbitration.
The Amsterdam-born attorney was awarded the "Arbitration Lawyer of the Year Award" by The International Who's Who of Business Lawyers in 2006, 2011, and 2017 and "Best Prepared and Most Responsive Arbitrator" by the Global Arbitration Review in 2013.
Following a bike accident, he became the awareness ambassador of the ICC Task Force on Disability Inclusion in International Arbitration.
