Students come to the University of Miami School of Law knowing they have at arm’s reach an abundance of opportunities and courses to develop their legal area of interest and turn professional aspirations into practice.
Miami Law has the 4th largest curriculum among all 199 ABA-accredited law schools offered across 18 areas of study. In addition, the law school also provides hands-on experiential programs to develop practice-ready students.
Always an academic innovator, the law school continues to lead the way in legal education on several fronts:
18 Areas of Study
Miami Law’s 18 areas of study offer students a wide choice of academic specialties with courses taught by faculty who are leaders in their fields. Many specialty areas reach students through academic programs in environmental law, global and international law, transactional law, human rights law, and litigation skills.
Experiential: Clinics, Practicums, Experiential Courses, Externships
Experiential learning is woven throughout the Miami Law curriculum. With nine clinics, students can access unparalleled experiences to represent real people and work on actual cases, plus work to influence policy. The law school also offers practicum classes in which law students get real-world experience working under the supervision of attorneys and professors in a non-lawyering role as they work on cases.
In Miami Law’s externship programs, students earn academic credits while gaining practical experience in a real-world setting, such as corporations, government agencies, public interest organizations, and the judiciary. Students can choose from a variety of programs to match their interests. The D.C. Semester in Practice Program allows law students to live and work in the U.S. Capital. The Litigation Skills Externship Program lets students represent clients and argue cases in Circuit, County, and Federal courts. In the Florida Supreme Court Fellows Program, fellows function as law clerks to individual justices.
3 Moot Court Programs
In moot courts, students learn how to litigate a case doing what attorneys do in real life. Students act as counselors and advocate the different sides of a case based on a problem written by an organization or school. Students can choose from three opportunities: the International Moot Court Program, Trial Team, and the Papy Moot Court Board.
Joint Degrees
Miami Law is part of a great university that prides itself on being at the forefront of interdisciplinary research and teaching. The law school partners with excellent graduate programs across the university to offer 20+ joint degrees in business, marine ecosystems, international arbitration, and more.
International Opportunities
On top of the 100+ courses and seminars in international, comparative, and foreign law, Miami Law gives students more than 25+ study-abroad opportunities in 13 countries to choose from. Through many offerings, students can develop cross-cutting expertise between areas often taught separately in other schools, such as finance and environmental law and intellectual property and human rights.
Beyond the classroom, students can delve into their legal interests by participating in five student journals and a robust offering of 55+ student organizations.
