International investment law and dispute settlement have been among the most dynamic areas of international law in recent decades.

The 2023 White & Case International Arbitration Lecture will examine the origins of investment protection, highlight recent reforms to investor-state dispute settlement procedure, address some of the misunderstandings about the topic, and discuss some of the challenges ahead. It will also consider the role of ISDS in attracting and retaining foreign direct investment as governments seek to establish policy, legal, and institutional environments conducive to mobilizing private capital.

Meg Kinnear, the secretary-general of the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes, will deliver the lecture "ICSID Arbitration: Past, Present and Future" September 21, 2023, at the University of Miami School of Law. Kinnear is considered the most successful Secretary-General of ICSID. She is also a vice president of the World Bank.

"During her tenure, the World Bank has transitioned from an institution adapting to an explosion of cases related to investment protections into a mature institution with a large portfolio of cases that have changed the field of foreign investment," said Adjunct Professor Jonathan Hamilton, Distinguished Faculty Chair of the International Arbitration Institute.

The lecture is co-hosted by Miami Law's International Arbitration Society student organization.

"This is a don't-miss event for those practicing in the international arbitration environment," said Sandra Friedrich, assistant dean for the international graduate law programs and director of the International Arbitration Institute. "It is also a valuable opportunity to connect with other practitioners in the field."

ICSID is an international arbitration institution established in 1966 for legal dispute resolution and conciliation between international investors and States.

"We are honored and pleased that Meg Kinnear will speak to our LL.M. students on this important topic. Adjunct Professor Carolyn Lamm, J.D. '73, Distinguished Faculty Co-Chair of the International Arbitration LL.M. "She is a star in the field, renowned and applauded for her leadership at ICSID at a time of significant change."

The Thursday, September 21, 2023, free event is open to the public. It will be held at the University of Miami's Lakeside Village Auditorium, 1280 Stanford Drive, Coral Gables, 33146, and will open at 5:30 for registration for in-person attendance. Parking is available at Pavia or Levante Garages, and a reception will follow the event. Florida CLE credits are pending.

The 6 to 7 p.m. E.T. lecture will also be streamed virtually.
