Rachel Maremont has joined Miami Law's Immigration Clinic as Acting Associate Director. Before joining the Clinic, Maremont practiced at the Metropolitan Public Defender in Portland, Oregon, representing low-income people charged with crimes. While a law student at New York University School of Law, she was an Arthur Garfield Hays Civil Rights Fellow and was awarded the Eric Dean Bender Prize, given annually to recognize one student's demonstrated commitment to public service.

"I am incredibly excited to join the Immigration Clinic - it's a privilege to contribute to the law school's vibrant clinical program alongside our top-notch faculty, staff, and students," said Maremont. "I believe immigrants' rights is one of the vital human rights issues of our lifetime, and I'm honored to stand with our noncitizen clients in their fight for dignity and safety."

Maremont spent two years as a student advocate with NYU's Immigrant Rights Clinic and Advanced Immigrant Rights Clinic. There, she represented noncitizen clients before the Second and Fifth Circuit Courts of Appeal and worked on policy and organizing efforts to protect immigrant activists targeted by the U.S. government. While in law school, she spent her summers at the Northwest Immigrant Rights Project in Tacoma, Washington, and the Alameda County Public Defender in Oakland, California. From 2015-2018, she worked at The Bronx Defenders.

At Miami Law's Immigration Clinic, Maremont supervises students who represent clients facing deportation, engages in coalition work with other advocates and organizers, and participates in the clinic's affirmative federal court litigation.

"I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Professor Maremont," said Professor Rebecca Sharpless, Director of the Immigration Clinic. "Although she has been with us for only a few months, she has already proved to be a gifted teacher and advocate."
