Attending book discussions between authors and expert commentators is a great way to stay informed and engaged in legal issues.
Four Events at Miami Law this Spring Celebrating New Books by Faculty

Miami Law will host four events in February and March to celebrate new books by its faculty. From discussions about Title IX to deportation reform to racial injustice to the nuts-and-bolts of law clinics, these panels promise to be both thought-provoking and informative.

"The book events being held this spring celebrate the extraordinary productivity of our faculty and its serious engagement with important current issues" said Professor Kunal Parker, associate dean for Intellectual Life and Dean's Distinguished Scholar. "Members of the larger community are invited to attend so that they can learn about the exciting things happening at UM Law."

On Thursday, February 1, 2024, Professor Tamara Lave will discuss her book, "Sexual Assault on Campus: Defending Due Process," (Cambridge University Press) with Kim Benston, the Francis B. Gummere Professor of English and former president of Haverford College; Aya Gruber, Professor of Law, USC Gould School of Law; and R. Shep Melnick, the Thomas P. O'Neill, Jr., professor of American politics, Boston College. The event is free and open to the public with registration. It will be held in the faculty meeting room on the third floor of the Miami Law Library at 5:30 p.m. 

On Monday, February 5, 2024, Professor Rebecca A. Sharpless, associate dean for Experiential Learning and director of the Immigration Clinic, will discuss her book "Shackled: 92 Refugees Imprisoned on ICE Air," (University of California Press) with Donette Francis, Professor of English and director of the Center for Global Black Studies at the University of Miami; Fatma Marouf, Professor of Law and director of the Immigrant Rights Clinic at Texas A&M University School of Law; and Hiroshi Motomura, the Susan Westerberg Prager Distinguished Professor of Law and faculty co-director of the Center for Immigration Law and Policy at UCLA School of Law. Sa'id Janale and Abdiqadir Rage, two special guests who were passengers on the ICE Air flight that are the subject of the book, will attend. The event is free and open to the public with registration. It will be held in the law school's Alma Jennings Foundation Student Lounge at 6:00 p.m.

On Thursday, February 22, 2024, Professor Donald Jones will discuss his book"The Presumption: Racial Injustice in the United States," (Bloomsbury Academic) with Barbara Arnwine, president and founder of The Transformative Justice Coalition; nationally known trial attorney Tom Messerau, Mesereau Law Group; and Jonathan Simon, the Lance Robbins Professor of Criminal Justice Law at UC Berkeley School of Law. The event is free and open to the public with registration. It will be held in the law school's Alma Jennings Foundation Student Lounge at 6:00 p.m. 

On Wednesday, March 6, 2024, Professor JoNel Newman, director of the Health Rights Clinic, and one of her co-authors, Richard Grimes, a visiting professor at Charles University, Prague, Czech Republic, will discuss their book, "How To Set Up and Run a Law Clinic - Principles and Practice" (Edward Elgar Publishing). Discussants are Sameer AsharClinical Professor of Law at the University of California, Irvine School of Law; Peggy Maisel, Professor of Law Emerita at the Boston University School of Law; and Paul R. Tremblay, Clinical Professor of Law and director at the Community Enterprise Clinic at the Boston College Law School. The event is free and open to the public with registration.
