Dr. Or Cohen-Sasson has joined Miami Law as its inaugural Law & Tech Fellow, a move that will set the stage for integrating artificial intelligence in the School of Law. Cohen-Sasson will be responsible for establishing the AI and Law Lab, which will serve as a hub for interdisciplinary research, innovation, and education in the field of AI and law. The new appointment will enable Miami Law to offer its students and faculty a unique opportunity to further explore the intersection of law and technology and help shape the future of legal practice.
"I am honored to join Miami Law and excited to set up the AI and Law Lab,” said Cohen-Sasson. “The Lab is a testament to the school’s commitment to excellent, pioneering education and cutting-edge research. AI holds an immense potential for the legal domain, especially for legal practice and scholarship, and Miami Law is one of the first law schools to develop a strategy to take advantage of this technology and prepare its students and faculty for the future."
One of Cohen-Sasson's main goals in setting up the AI and Law Lab is to facilitate the integration of AI in the School of Law.
"The lab will mainly focus on providing students with AI-related literacy and skills within the legal domain, allowing students to navigate the increasingly digital landscape successfully," said Cohen-Sasson. "Also, the lab will facilitate AI use in research and teaching for interested faculty. The most fundamental objective is to promote a culture at Miami Law that adopts AI in a professional, beneficial, and safe manner in various contexts."
Cohen-Sasson has a rich, multi-disciplinary background. In 2023, he graduated with a doctoral degree from the Faculty of Law, Tel Aviv University. Besides his legal credentials (Ph.D., LL.M., LL.B.), he has an academic and practical experience in biology (B.Sc.) and computer science (toward completion of his B.Sc.).
“We have an outstanding inaugural Law & Tech fellow in Dr. Or Cohen-Sasson,” said Professor Andew Dawson, vice dean of academic affairs in his announcement to the law school. “Or has extensive experience and publications in the Law & Tech area, and he is eager to work with faculty, staff, and students at Miami Law.”
Originally from Israel, Cohen-Sasson conducted research in several international law schools and has had the opportunity to live in Paris, Aarhus in Denmark, and Tokyo. "These wonderful experiences have enriched my knowledge and revealed fascinating cultures and people; not less important, they enabled me to cultivate a strong international academic network," he says.
While the exact plan for the AI and Law Lab is still in progress, Cohen-Sasson promises it will be exciting and valuable to the Law School community.
"I am thrilled to be part of UM, and specifically to join the Miami Law team,” he says. “I always knew about UM's academic excellence; after just three weeks here, I understand that it's not just about academic rigor but also about a warm, welcoming, and supportive community. As I embark on this new chapter, I am eager to contribute my experience and perspective to further enrich this vibrant academic community."
