Innovatively designed for non-lawyer professionals, the 30-credit Master of Legal Studies online program blends the flexibility of a part-time, asynchronous learning experience with the highest caliber of academics guided by expert, law faculty.
"Whether its human resources, healthcare, finance, technology, or risk management, non-lawyer professionals interact with law every day," said Patricia Sanchez Abril, interim dean and professor of business law. "In our highly regulated and rapidly evolving world, professionals must be well-versed in the laws governing their industries – and expert in analytical and communication skills. We are thrilled to launch a rigorous, engaging online MLS degree program and excited to welcome our new MLS students to the Miami Law community."
The foundational "core" courses in the Master of Legal Studies online program equip the participants to analyze and communicate about the laws and regulations governing each industry. Core courses include Foundations in U.S. Law and Regulation, Legal Research and Writing, and Analysis Skills, and Corporate Compliance & Enterprise Risk Management. The curriculum concludes with a master's capstone course, performed under the guidance of a program faculty member.
MLS online faculty are recognized experts in their fields. They are actively engaged with the fast-paced and ever-evolving changes in the law and deal with the same issues facing the industry currently. They are rigorously trained to teach relevant law courses, developed with an in-house design team in an asynchronous, interactive environment.
Small classes allow for lasting professional relationships with faculty and abundant opportunities to engage with them inside the virtual classroom and outside of it.
Unlike other online MLS programs, participants become part of the University of Miami School of Law community and have access to a world of benefits—from a virtual student lounge to engage with class peers to the "virtual coffee" with the dean of the program to Miami Law's global 23,000+ alumni network, which opens a wealth of opportunities. Participants are invited to law events at the 'U' and can engage with law affinity groups.
The program also offers a virtual career office specifically for Miami Law MLS students. It includes resumé review, access to law-specific employment databases, and one-on-one career advising to position participants for success and fuel their career growth.
