Harout J. Samra, a Miami native, had always been passionate about pursuing a career in law owing to his keen interest in public policy, economics, and political science. Though he is the first lawyer in his family, his determination to make a meaningful impact on others' lives has been evident since a young age.

As a lifelong Miamian, Samra knew there was no other place he wanted to live. He believes that Miami is one of the most dynamic, fastest-growing markets in the world, and Miami Law is “at the center of the dynamic story of Miami.” While attending law school, Samra was the state chairman of the College Republicans in Florida during the 2008 presidential election. He served as a youth surrogate for the presidential campaign and was interviewed by the Wall Street Journal. He also was recognized as a “Young Person Who Rocks” by CNN. He was also a delegate at the 2012 Republican National Convention. He continues to be very active in political campaigns.

After graduation, Samra worked for two years at Squire Sanders & Dempsey (now Squire Patton Boggs) before joining DLA Piper as one of its first lawyers in Miami. He has been with DLA Piper for the last thirteen years. His practice focuses on international dispute resolution and complex regulatory matters. He travels frequently for his job, working on matters throughout the world, which allows him to engross himself in new legal and social cultures.

Samra has been appointed by Governors Rick Scott and Ron DeSantis to judicial nominating commissions. He served on the nominating commission for the Third District Court of Appeal, including as its chair for one year. He currently serves as a member of the Florida Supreme Court Nominating Commission. He was most recently appointed by Senator Marco Rubio to his Judicial Advisory Commission for the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida. He remains active in the Federalist Society, the American Bar Association, and the Armenian Bar Association.

Samra has taught courses at Miami Law, including a course on international arbitration, and makes it a priority to be a mentor for students. He is the president-elect designate for the Law Alumni Association and will serve as president of the board during the university’s centennial year.

Outside of his career as a lawyer, Samra enjoys traveling. Music is also a very important part of his life, and he plays the violin and piano. Additionally, he enjoys reading and spending time with friends and family.
