Professor Kele Stewart Holds Workshop on Abolishing the Family Policing System
Professor Kele Stewart

Professor Kele Stewart, co-director of the Children and Youth Law Clinic, received a $5,000 grant from Miami Law to host a convening on April 19th to explore the frameworks and strategies for abolition of the child welfare system, and concretely discuss alternative legal, policy and social infrastructure needed for families to thrive in a world without the family policing system. The event will be held at the Alma Jennings Foundation Student Lounge from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the School of Law.

Stewart has devoted her career to improving the lives of children. At the clinic, she supervises students who handle cases involving abused, abandoned, and neglected children. She also teaches courses on family and juvenile law and legal practice.  Her scholarship is in the areas of child welfare, children’s rights, and clinical education.

Stewart served as Associate Dean of Experiential Learning, responsible for administrative oversight of the Law Schools clinics, externships, and other practical courses. In 2011-2012, she received a Fulbright Scholar award to study the child protection system in her native country Trinidad & Tobago.
