In recognition of outstanding teaching, service, and research, nearly 150 University faculty members and leaders celebrated the 2024 Provost's Awards May 1. Throughout the event, colleagues collectively shared their excitement and enthusiasm about the accomplishments of the past year and the opportunities of the forthcoming semester.
Composed of three categories—Research Awards, Teaching Awards, and Awards for Faculty Excellence and Impact—each category focuses on outstanding achievement and impact.
"With more than 150 nominations, today is a celebration of not just the winners but also the nominees," said Guillermo "Willy" Prado, interim executive vice president for academic affairs and provost. "Together, our faculty members drive innovation, discovery, and perspective that hold the power to shape the University community and impact the world."
Three members of the School of Law's faculty received awards, and a fourth was nominated.
Marni Lennon, assistant dean of Public Interest and Pro Bono and director of the HOPE Public Interest Resource Center, was recognized with an Innovation in Teaching Award.
The Innovation in Teaching Award recognizes a faculty member who has overcome a difficult course-related problem with a novel and enduring approach (novel meaning that it is new to the University of Miami or new to a discipline). The innovation may be made through technology or involve adopting a new teaching format, a novel engagement with content, the creation of new learning activities, or engagement with external entities. There should be evidence that the innovation made a demonstrable difference in learning outcomes.
Denisse Córdova Montes, acting associate director of the Human Rights Clinic, received the Excellence in Experiential Teaching Award.
The Excellence in Experiential Teaching Award recognizes a member of the faculty who demonstrates an outstanding commitment to the student learning process, integrating excellent teaching with opportunities for experiential learning through curricular and co-curricular activities and actively promoting and guiding learning outside of the classroom. Nominees should excel at developing students' "practical intelligence."
Professor William Widen was awarded a University of Miami Provost Research Award for his research project, "Responsible Regulation of Automated Vehicles and Corporate Governance."
The awards are designed to contribute to the growth of the University's research portfolio and advance opportunities for scholarship and creative activities. This year's awards funded 34 applications from seven schools and colleges.
Professor Tamara Lave was nominated for the Excellence in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Award, which recognizes faculty who have made exceptional contributions to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion at UM. The faculty member should reflect the ideals of DEI and have supported efforts beyond their primary responsibilities to enhance DEI in their teaching, service/outreach, research, scholarship, or creative works.
