Now in its 20th year, the QS World University Rankings are annual rankings of the world’s top universities in individual subject areas. Published by Quacquarelli Symonds, the rankings help prospective students identify the world’s leading schools in a particular subject and are regarded as one of the most influential and widely respected international university rankings.
Key Components to the Rankings
Believed to be the largest of its kind, the yearly QS subject rankings assess performance according to five areas: academic reputation, employer reputation, research, H-index (based on most cited papers), and international research network.
According to the site, if a university does not appear, “it does not mean that it is a ‘bad’ university. Merely that it doesn’t score highly enough on QS’s chosen indicators to feature in that particular rankings table.”
To produce the rankings this year, QS analyzed the reputation and research output of almost 5,000 institutions. From this group, 1,561 were ranked across 55 subjects and five broad subject areas, creating over 19,100 entries.
