"The Nation's Youngest Federal Court: The United States Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims at 35" is the upcoming Robert B. Cole Lecture with the Honorable Michael P. Allen of the U.S. Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims, November 14, 2024, at the University of Miami School of Law.
Allen was nominated by the president of the United States, confirmed by the U. S. Senate, and appointed a judge of the United States Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims over the summer of August 2017.
For 16 years before his judicial appointment, Allen was a tenured law professor at Stetson University College of Law in Gulfport, Florida. He was also the director of Stetson's Veterans Law Institute and spent four years as the College of Law's associate dean. Allen also served as a visiting professor of law at the University of Illinois College of Law. Before entering teaching, Allen practiced law for nine years in the litigation department of the Boston-based international law firm Ropes & Gray.
The Robert B. Cole Lecture Series is part of an array of distinguished lectures, forums, panel discussions, and other scholarly events sponsored by the law school and by student organizations providing a forum for faculty, students, practicing attorneys, and the public to hear distinguished jurists and public figures discuss essential legal and international matters. The Cole Lecture was established in 1985 through the generosity of the former Miami law firm of Mershon, Sawyer, Johnston, Dunwody & Cole.
The series honors the late Robert B. Cole, who served for years as the principal legal advisor for the University of Miami and served on the School of Law's Visiting Committee. Previous speakers have included U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice Warren E. Burger, Chief Justice William Rehnquist, Justice John Paul Stevens, Justice William J. Brennan, Jr., Justice Harry A. Blackmun, Justice Antonin Scalia, Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, Justice Stephen G. Breyer, Justice Anthony M. Kennedy, and Alex Kozinski, Chief Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals.
"The Nation's Youngest Federal Court: The United States Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims at 35" lecture is free and open to the public with registration.
