Professor Jessica Owley, director of the Environmental Law Program, recently participated in the 22nd Annual Colloquium of the Academy of Environmental Law of the International Union for Conservation of Nature in Lima, Peru. Hundreds of environmental law academics and professionals from five continents participated in the colloquium on issues of sustainable development, climate change, and the fight against the decline of biodiversity. Owley contributed to both teaching and research workshops as North America's research committee representative. She presented her work on private land conservation, while J.D./Ph.D. student Gabriella Berman discussed her research on deep-sea mining, highlighting Miami Law's environmental law scholarship.
Owley is a leading expert on private land conservation and conservation easements. Her interdisciplinary work explores ways to mitigate and adapt to climate change, as well as furthering other environmental goals in the context of drastic change. Her work is cited widely and has received multiple awards, including, most recently, the 2019 Morrison Prize for sustainability research. She annually participates as an observer at the annual treaty negotiations for the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
