Janet Stearns, Lecturer in Law and former Dean of Students at the University of Miami School of Law, will lead the newly launched Burton Book Review. This review is named in honor of Bill Burton, who has always been a promoter of legal writing. The Burton Book Review will highlight books that shed light on pressing issues in law, governance, and justice. Each review will examine not only the text’s contributions to legal doctrine but also its broader implications for policy, practice, and society at large. Additionally, each review will not only summarize and evaluate the chosen text, but also invite readers to reflect on how these works challenge, inspire, and guide in the practice and study of law.
Stearns has long championed the importance of scholarly exchange and professional development within the legal academy during her tenure as dean of students. Under her leadership, the Burton Review will set a high standard for intellectual engagement and serve as a valuable resource for both the legal profession and broader community.
Stearns speaks nationally, writes, and podcasts on law student wellbeing and strategies for law schools to promote a culture of wellbeing in the profession. She spearheaded the Fall Wellness Week and the Dean of Students Constitutional (walk) around the campus. She coordinates closely with the School of Law’s Mindfulness in Law Program and drafted the preface to Scott Rogers’ book “Mindfulness for Law Students.”
