Master Sustainable Business
IS THIS BEACH SUSTAINABLE? – Corporate responsibility is increasingly important for our cities.

The University of Miami Business School is proud to announce an exciting new degree: the Master of Science in Sustainable Business. The first class will start in August 2019.

“Sustainability is moving beyond the traditional sustainability officer to all facets of business. Accountants are integrating environmental and social performance metrics with traditional financial reporting. Supply chain managers are working to green their supply chains. Trillions of dollars of assets are now invested in socially responsible portfolios. The MBS Master of Science in Sustainable Business will provide students and their employers with integrated training in sustainable management methods across all business disciplines,” said Economics Professor David Kelly.

There is a vigorous demand for graduates with training in sustainability across multiple industries from energy and manufacturing through healthcare and hospitality to accounting and consulting.

“This degree will prepare Generation Z to become the chief sustainability officers of the 21st century,” said Dean John Quelch.

The curriculum includes a heavy science component taught by faculty at the esteemed Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences. As a result, the new Miami Business School degree will be the first STEM certified degree in Sustainable Business in the United States.

The Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB) has recently promulgated 77 industry standards for corporate sustainability reporting.

“Miami Business School can speak with authority in this area as no city in the Western Hemisphere is more threatened by climate change and ocean rise than Miami,” said Vice Dean of Graduate Business Education Patricia Abril.

“First, it is highly inter-disciplinary, bringing in climate science, law, public policy and engineering into the business sustainability conversation. The University has well-established schools and expertise in all of these areas.

“Second, we have developed the curriculum in conjunction with sustainability industry professionals to determine the skills necessary for future leaders in this area. We have also determined that there are terrific career prospects for students graduating with a rigorous degree in Sustainable Business.”

According to a 2015 study published in the Harvard Business Review, “The number of companies with full-time sustainability officers doubled between 1995 and 2003, and doubled again between 2003 and 2008. It has continued to grow at a feverish pace.”

“Given our geography and climate challenges, Miami speaks with unique authority on this important topic. We believe this degree fulfills a major and urgent societal need,” said Vice Dean Abril.
