As an associate professor of professional practice with a research focus on insurance bad faith, Shapiro brings a wealth of litigation expertise from his years as a practicing attorney. Prior to joining the Miami Herbert faculty full time in 1994, Shapiro was a partner of Akerman, LLP, where he chaired the firm's national Insurance Litigation Practice Group and served on its Board of Directors.

“In his class BSL 212, we learned about the complexities of business contracts and the types of requirements that make them valid,” said Kyle Kingma (BBA’19), a former student of Shapiro. “Beyond teaching the basics of these contracts, Dr. Shapiro would write specific cases involving each of the requirements based on real life cases that dealt with these issues.”

“His approach was not a cookie-cutter approach to understanding how contracts work,” said Kingma.

In addition, Shapiro has been an exemplary resource for students who seek guidance to launch their careers in business through his role as Director of Undergraduate Career Resources.

From 2015-2017, for three years straight, Miami Herbert Business School awarded Shapiro for Excellence in Teaching in the School’s Professional MBA and Undergraduate Programs. He was also recognized by Best Lawyers in America from 2013-2017 as one of America's best lawyers in Insurance Law.
