The virtual event, which took place on Nov. 13, was cohosted by Miami Herbert and UADE University in Argentina.

Last year, UADE organized a “Tax and Finance Challenge” in which students prepared an investment portfolio to maximize benefits under certain situations. The event was so well received that UADE proposed a similar idea with a hemispheric reach.

Identifying the prospect of expanding the experiential international opportunity, the Hemispheric Investment Portfolio Challenge was broadened to other institutions in the hemisphere. Student teams from Miami Herbert, Universidad San Ignacio de Loyola (USIL) in Peru, Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra in Dominican Republic, Universidad EAN in Colombia, Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León in Mexico, and Cohost Universidad Argentina de la Empresa (UADE) in Argentina stunned the panel of judges with their remarkable presentations.

In a parallel meeting, judges from participating institutions were joined by executives representing the sponsors—Santander and Microsoft LATAM—in the winning selection process. Meanwhile, event participates enjoyed a panel on “Financial Trends in Latin America” with Professors Lorenzo Naranjo of Miami Herbert and Fausto Spotorno of UADE, moderated by Oscar Luzuriaga, Latin America and Caribbean Initiative Advisory Board Member, Miami Herbert.

Captivated with the level of the presentations, Miami Herbert alumnus Marcelo Fumasoni ’09, head of human resources for Microsoft LATAM, announced the UADE team as the runner-up. Silvia Trujillo, Investment Manager at Santander in Argentina, then announced the winning teams— Miami Herbert and Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra in Dominican Republic—which tied for first place.

“It was a real pleasure to meet students from all over the world on this incredible business challenge," said Fumasoni. "It was a unique opportunity to learn and collaborate across countries and universities while allowing students, professors, and business executives to build a full learning community."

“Thank you all for providing such a great opportunity to present our thoughts and communicate with students from other nations,” said Chuhao Sun, on behalf of the UM team with Zhihao Wu and Clarence Ren. “The presentation from professors also enlightened us a lot. The whole event went off without hitch. Thank you all again for all the efforts! Thank you, Dr. Tie Su. You really helped us a lot. We could not have accomplished this without you!”

Organizers closed the event by inviting participants to The Hemispheric Investment Challenge 2021!
