“The impact of Dr. Shalala’s career both in academia and as a dedicated public servant will provide our students in the Health Management and Policy program an unparalleled educational experience,” said Michael French, department chair and professor in the Health Management and Policy Department, and academic director for the Master in Health Administration program. “Miami Herbert is thrilled to have someone of her caliber, and it will be a tremendous learning experience for our students to have her back in the classroom.”
After a prolific career that began as a Peace Corps volunteer and then continued as university professor, cabinet secretary, leader of three universities, and President of the Clinton Foundation, Shalala is excited to return UM.
“I love teaching, and I am excited to be back in the classroom,” said Shalala.
During her two years in Congress (2019-2021), Shalala, who is the longest serving Secretary of Health and Human Services in U.S. history, served on the House Committee on Education and Labor and its subcommittee that addressed health issues, as well as the House Rules Committee. She was the U.S. representative for Florida's 27th congressional district.
“For all her accomplishments, Dr. Shalala remains a down-to-earth teacher who loves sharing with and motivating students,” said John Quelch, dean of Miami Herbert. “We are thrilled to welcome her back into our classrooms.”
