NCLEX Scores On The Rise

School of Nursing and Health Studies graduates have enjoyed a steady improvement in their National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) scores in the past few years, thanks to a variety of steps implemented by DeanNilda (Nena) P. Peragallo Montano, DrPH, RN, FAAN in 2005, which are still in effect—and providing positive results.

In addition to a number of curriculum changes that have helped students gain stronger baseline knowledge of medical/surgical nursing, the school now uses standardized tests within its courses.

“These tests not only duplicate the NCLEX exam, they also provide valuable diagnostic tools for our students so they can evaluate their strengths and weakness at the end of any given course.” Says Gail C. McCain, Ph.D., R.N., F.A.A.N., vice dean, senior associate dean for academic affairs and a professor at the school.

Students also have access to tutoring services to improve their areas of weakness. Faculty conduct review sessions and doctoral students help provide tutoring services throughout the school’s curriculum.

“And during their final course, we offer students a three-day-NCLEX review course, which is a comprehensive review of everything they have learned in their nursing curriculum.” McCain adds. These efforts have paid off. In 2009, the school’s B.S.N. graduates had a 94.16 percentage passing rate on the exam representing a 15-percent increase when compared to 2007.
