SONHS Global Studies Program in Chile

It was the trip of a lifetime!
Twenty one students from the School of Nursing and Health Studies are busy traveling abroad learning about healthcare in the School’s Global Studies Program with Universidad Andres Bello, collaboration since 2005 and Universidad Católica in Chile.

While South Florida boasts a vibrant mix of cultures and languages, nothing equals the experience of studying abroad and immersing yourself in another country’s traditions and daily way of life. UM students apply their skills and gain an international perspective on nursing care working with the Pontifícia Universidad Católica de Chile and the Universidad Andres Bello in Santiago, Chile.

Community activities include assessing needs in rural areas and establishing actions plans for the future, administering immunizations, providing prevention and education sessions on diabetes to all local inhabitants. “Our students establish relationships with Chilean nursing students and instructors that help them recognize that nursing is a profession without boundaries,” says program director Johis Ortega, PhD, ARNP, BC, MSN ’06, BSN ’02. Dr. Ortega and Susana Barrosso, PhD, BSN, RN are the faculty advisors traveling with the students.
