SONHS’ Global Studies: Summer 2014

The School of Nursing and Health Studies’ global initiatives include bi-directional exchange agreements with hospitals and health care institutions in Chile, Haiti, Mexico, Brazil, Spain, Taiwan, the Dominican Republic, and Australia.
Strong collaborative relationships with its international partners provide opportunities for students and faculty from around the world to visit the SONHS, and for the school’s own students to represent the school at hospitals and healthcare institutions worldwide. These traveling student groups get to observe the practice of nursing in countries other than their own, while gaining an international perspective on healthcare systems.

On May 26th, 10 nursing students and 1 instructor from Universidad Autónoma de Tamaulipas in Tampico, México arrived in Miami. On June 30th, the SONHS expects students and an instructor from Universidad Autónoma de Campeche, also in Mexico. In July, the school will host aspiring nursing professionals from Universidad Andres Bello in Chile and Universidad de Barcelona, Spain. Their faculty hosts at the SONHS will arrange for these students to participate in observerships that include classes, simulation learning at the school’s state-of-the-art International Academy for Clinical Simulation and Research, and observation of clinical care and practice at UM Hospital and other hospitals and clinical care centers of the school’s community partners throughout the South Florida region.

In keeping with the bi-directional nature of the program, the SONHS own undergraduate and graduate nursing students will travel to Universidad de Barcelona (Spain), Pontifica Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra (Dominican Republic), National Tapei University of Nursing and Health Sciences (Taiwan), and Australian Catholic University (Melbourne, AU) during what promises to be a busy summer for the school’s global studies initiatives.
