INTER PROFESSIONAL PATIENT SAFETY Week-long Summer Initiative

For the second year, students at the School of Nursing & Health Studies (SONHS) and the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine are participating in a joint course designed to improve communication and patient safety practices.
Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing students and third-year medical students have come together for the weeklong Inter-professional Patient Safety Course, dividing their time between the Gordon Center for Research in Medical Education (GCRME) and the UM-JMH Center for Patient Safety (CPS) on the medical campus and the School of Nursing and Health Studies (SONHS) on the Gables campus. The initiative highlights the importance of inter-disciplinary collaboration, between nurses and doctors, to ensure patient safety.

On Day 3 of the course, the SONHS welcomed the students to the Gables Campus for an exciting day that began at the Lowe Art Museum with a morning of visual thinking strategy exercises. This workshop on "The Fine Art of Healthcare" is an innovative and interdisciplinary program that uses art to hone observational and communication skills in the service of clinical diagnosis. Both the medical and nursing students engaged actively in the discussions.
