University of Texas at El Paso 2014 Conference

In May of 2014, five El Centro associated faculty from the School of Nursing and Health Studies shared their research findings with leading investigators from across the country at the University of Texas at El Paso 2014 Conference on “Vulnerability to Drug Abuse among Hispanics: Bridging Science and Society.”
Presentations by Drs. Julie Barroso, Victoria Mitrani, Natalia Villegas, Brian McCabe and Joe De Santis included findings, respectively, from: 1) an intervention to reduce stigma in HIV-infected women in the Deep South; 2) a family intervention for mothers in recovery and their children; 3) an internet based STI and HIV prevention intervention for young Chilean women; 4) a comparison of the effectiveness of two alcohol screening tools administered in a university health clinic; and 5) a study looking at the influence of cultural factors on risk behaviors in Hispanic men who have sex with men.

Additionally, in keeping with El Centro’s mission to serve as a resource to investigators regarding health disparities research methodology, Dr. Mitrani gave a keynote address entitled: “Reducing Health Disparities through Culturally Tailored Intervention Science”.

El Centro associated faculty continue the Center’s mission to advance the scientific development of culturally-tailored interventions to improve the health of groups who experience health disparities through research, education and collaboration with community and academic partners.
