XIV Pan American Nursing Research Colloquium – Cartagena, Colombia

PAHO/WHO Collaborating Centre Leads SONHS’ Participation in Pan American Nursing Research Colloquium
As part of its mission as a World Health Organization (WHO)-designated Collaborating Centre for Nursing Human Resources Development and Patient, the SONHS was well-represented at the XIV Pan American Nursing Research Colloquium by its faculty, staff and Dean Nilda (Nena) Peragallo Montano, who served as Vice-Chair of the event. The prestigious biennial gathering of over 1,000 nurse researchers, educators, practitioners, and students took place in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia from September 5-11, 2014 and was hosted by ACOFAEN (The Colombian Association of Schools and Colleges of Nursing), with the theme of “Evidence and commitment: Transcending frontiers in nursing care”.

During the Colloquium, SONHS Dean Nilda Peragallo Montano joined other internationally recognized nursing scientists to share insights at an invited panel discussion on Estado Actual de la Aplicación de la Investigación en Enfermería [Applied nursing research: State of the science]. Dean Peragallo spoke about “Situación Actual de la Investigación en Enfermería en EE.UU [State of the Science in Nursing Research in the United States).” The Dean also delivered a separate podium presentation at the colloquium entitled, “Curso Interprofesional Sobre La Seguridad del Paciente Para Mejorar El Trabajo En Equipo [Improving teamwork through an interprofessional patient safety course”].

At breakout and poster sessions during the course of the week, SONHS faculty members Drs. Johis Ortega and Joseph DeSantis disseminated their research findings on such topics as safe sex and predictors of depression among Hispanic men who have sex with men. The SONHS also showcased its research/academic programs, online distance education resources and other products at a display booth in the colloquium’s Exhibit Hall.

At a special general session on the last day of the Colloquium, Dr. Johis Ortega formally introduced a new open-access Nursing Leadership online course to an international audience of nursing and healthcare clinicians, administrators, educators, and researchers. The course was designed as an initiative of the school’s WHO Collaborating Centre for Nursing Human Resources Development and Patient Safety in collaboration with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), the ACOFAEN’S WHO Collaborating Centre for the Development of Innovative Methodologies in Teaching and Learning, and the University of the West Indies School of Nursing WHO Collaborating Centre for Nursing and Midwifery Development in the Caribbean.

Satellite meetings to the colloquium included the Pan American Nursing and Midwifery Collaborating Centres (PANMCC), the RIENSEP (International Network of Nursing and Patient Safety Experts), and ALADEFE (Latina American Association of Schools and Colleges of Nursing).
