Health communication is a diverse field that involves disseminating promotional health information for the purpose of improving the public’s health literacy, and thus their personal health choices, overall health, and quality of life in a positive direction. The Health Communication minor is designed to provide students with an in-depth exposure to key elements of health communication and public health, while highlighting the important interrelationship between the two disciplines.
“Health communication links public health and communication studies, journalism, advertising and public relations,” said Martin Zdanowicz, Associate Dean for Health Studies and Professor of Clinical at the SONHS. “The health communication students of today will be the researchers, scholars, practitioners, communications managers and health and science journalists of tomorrow.”
The new minor consists of 15 credits, comprised of a combination of required core classes, as well as 6 Communication Studies credits and 3 Public Health credits from a selected list of courses at the School of Communications and the School of Nursing and Health Studies, respectively.
