On Wednesday, healthcare met the humanities as the SONHS welcomed the students to the Gables campus for a day full of activities. At the Lowe Art Museum, combined teams of nursing and medical students experienced “The Fine Art of Healthcare,” followed by a visit to the SONHS International Academy for Clinical Simulation and Research, where the future nurses and physicians collaborated on simulated real-life clinical scenarios to ensure the best patient safety outcomes. The day closed at the College of Arts and Sciences’ Cox Science Center, with a lecture on the importance of teamwork to ensure the best patient experiences from Dr. David Birnbach, UMMSM Vice-Provost, Professor and UM/JMH CPS Director. Frost School of Music Dean Shelton Berg, who also addressed the students, compared the string quartet playing in perfect harmony to the experience of a well-orchestrated interprofessional healthcare team working to help a patient in distress.
The course is a true partnership experience, designed and implemented collaboratively by SONHS Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs Dr. Mary Mckay and Dr. Birnbach, in close collaboration with the JMH CPS, and other SONHS, UMMSM, Frost School and College of Arts and Sciences faculty. It represents the University of Miami’s educational leadership in complying with national mandates for health professions educators to instill in all students the tools for interprofessional collaboration.
