Nursing education to enjoy overseas input
Nursing education is poised for enhancement. At least this is the conviction of Minister within the Ministry of Public Health, Dr. Karen Cummings.
Her belief is premised on the fact that local nursing tutors are benefiting from some much-needed education sessions that are being facilitated by a visiting nursing team.
The two-member team from the University of Miami, School of Nursing and Health Studies is expected to conduct a series of workshops as part of an ongoing training and development exercise.
The Ministry of Public Health has been collaborating with the University as part of a programme funded by the Pan American Health Organisation/World Health Organisation (PAHO/WHO) which is primarily designed to build capacity among tutors of nursing in Guyana.
Currently, there are 25 nursing tutors taking part in this training programme for the Certificate in Basic Nursing Education. The tutors were chosen from the Georgetown School of Nursing, the Charles Rosa School of Nursing in Linden, the New Amsterdam School of Nursing and the St Joseph Mercy Hospital School of Nursing. The programme design allows for distance learning with a number of face-to-face components included.
The visit here by Associate Professor of Clinical, Associate Dean of Undergraduate Nursing Programmes, Ms. Mary McKay; and Assistant Professor of Clinical Ms. Deborah Salani from the University of Miami, School of Nursing and Health Studies, is part of the face-to-face component of the training programme.
Minister within the Ministry of Public Health, Dr. Karen Cummings, met the visiting team and thanked them for being willing to share their knowledge, skills, and experience with the local Nursing Tutors. She also stated how pleased she is that Guyana can benefit from such reputable international skills-training and experience that are being provided by the University of Miami, School of Nursing and Health Studies.
The Public Health Minister observed too that with the level of training taking place for Guyanese Nursing Tutors, the result must be an enhancement in the delivery of Nursing Education in Guyana.
Principal of the Georgetown School of Nursing, Ms. Cleopatra Barkoye, and Minister Cummings; Director of Health Sciences Education, Mr. Wilton Benn; and Chief Nursing Officer, Ms. Tarmattie Barker, took the Professors on a tour of the Georgetown School of Nursing. There team met and interacted with students and tutors.
